Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is taking a Canada-first message directly to an American audience as the trade dispute between the two countries continues.

Speaking to CNBC during a visit to the United States, Poilievre said Canadians may disagree on politics at home, but are united when it comes to pushing back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

When asked whether Prime Minister Mark Carney was responsible for the latest breakdown in trade negotiations, Poilievre declined to criticize the prime minister while in the U.S., saying his mission was to fight for Canada rather than score domestic political points.

Poilievre instead pointed to Washington’s decision to impose tariffs on Canada as the starting point of the escalating dispute.

He said Canadians are feeling both wounded and confused by the deteriorating relationship between the longtime allies, arguing the two countries should be working together rather than fighting a trade war.

Poilievre says Canada and the United States have the resources and longstanding relationship needed to build what he called an “incredible North American fortress,” but says that will require a return to a positive and collaborative relationship between the two countries.
