British Columbians are heading into the New Year with their sights set on safer, calmer driving.
A new ICBC survey, through Angus Reid, suggests showing more patience behind the wheel is the top driving resolution for 2026.
Among drivers interested in setting a goal, 42-percent say being more patient is their number one priority.
The survey shows many drivers are willing to give up everyday comforts in exchange for a less stressful commute.
30-percent of commuters say they would give up social media for a day to enjoy a calmer drive. Others say they would skip dining out or food delivery, online shopping, or coffee.
Overall, 66-percent of BC drivers say they’re interested in setting a driving-related goal for 2026.
Beyond patience, popular resolutions include combining errands to save gas and time, leaving earlier to avoid feeling rushed, improving fuel efficiency through smoother driving habits, and simply being less stressed on the road.
Environmental goals rank lower, with fewer drivers planning to drive less, switch to an electric vehicle, or carpool more often.
However, active transportation remains popular, with one-quarter of drivers planning to walk or cycle more, and some say they’ll use public transit more often.
Safety is the biggest motivator for drivers setting resolutions, followed closely by reducing stress and protecting mental health.
Saving money and setting a good example for family members also factor in the decision.
