One man is dead after a police shooting in Nanaimo on Saturday.

One man is dead after a police shooting in Nanaimo on Saturday.

RCMP were called to a dispute between a man and woman outside a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road - on Haliburton Street near Highview Terrace about 2pm on Saturday.

In a statement, RCMP say the man "allegedly produced a weapon."

Shots were fired and the man was hit. Paramedics say the man died at the scene.

The Independent Investigations Office is handling the case.

It looks into all instances of serious harm or death that may have been caused by police.
