The Comox Valley Regional District, the Town of Comox and the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project team have issued a joint thank you to the community for their patience during construction on Comox Road, Comox Avenue, through the Town of Comox and Electoral Area B.
The multi-year project, which began in May 2024, is replacing the pipes and upgrading the pump stations that move more than 14,000 cubic metres of raw sewage each day to the sewage treatment plant on Brent Road.
The project also includes retrofits to the K’ómoks First Nation and Town of Comox Pump Stations and a new Courtenay Pump Station.
The new system reroutes sewer pipes further inland where they will no longer be vulnerable to damage by waves, rocks, logs and weather.
The group says one of the most important goals of the project is to protect the shoreline and waters throughout the Comox Estuary, Point Holmes, Goose Spit coastlines, as well as Baynes Sound.
In addition, the Town of Comox and CVRD worked together on Town infrastructure upgrades along the Conveyance route.
That allowed the Town to advance major improvements including two new roundabouts, road upgrades, sidewalks, bike lanes, bus shelters, and full renewal of stormwater, water, and sanitary mains on this route.
These projects strengthen infrastructure, improve safety, and support sustainable and balanced growth.
Comox Mayor Nicole Minions says by bundling five major Town projects with the larger conveyance project under one tender, they managed substantial cost savings and operational efficiencies.
“This approach minimized road closures and community disruption by avoiding multiple excavation periods for separate projects. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as the Town continues to deliver important infrastructure upgrades that support a safe and resilient community.”
Although the sewer conveyance project is not fully completed yet, the reopening of Comox Road and Comox Avenue last week marked what the group calls an important milestone in the project.
Work on the pump stations is still ongoing, and it is expected the new conveyance system will be online next summer.
