The BC RCMP is clearing the air about the safe supply of prescription drugs making their way on the streets.
Police say the seizure of prescription drugs, such as narcotics and opioids, that are no longer in the possession of their prescribed owner is something the police have had to deal with on many occasions.
However, RCMP say in a release that the presence of confirmed safer supply prescriptions are in the minority of drug seizures.
While there have been recent investigations that have resulted in notable quantities being seized - including in Campbell River - police say there is currently no evidence to support a widespread diversion of safer supply drugs in the illicit market in BC or Canada.
However, the national police force says its officers are aware of the situation and keep their eyes open for cases where safer supply drugs may be present within their investigations.
Last month, Campbell River RCMP arrested a 50 year old woman after a bust at a home. In addition to fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, over 3500 Hydromorphone pills, believed to be diverted from the safe supply, were found.
Drug trafficking charges are being recommended against the woman and charges are also being recommended against three others as a result of the investigation.
