A new program has been launched aimed at helping B.C.’s fishing and aquaculture sectors deal with old fishing gear and marine plastics in a more responsible and sustainable way.
The Ocean Legacy Foundation’s Marine Plastic Management Program is designed to improve how end-of-life fishing gear is collected, tracked, recycled and reused, turning plastic waste into new resources instead of leaving it to pollute coastlines and oceans.
The non-profit says the initiative supports Canada’s growing circular economy and gives businesses a way to reduce plastic leakage into the environment while improving how materials are tracked and reported.
By signing up, businesses can access enhanced environmental reporting tools, a membership decal, and even updates on how their recovered gear is being reused.
It’s all part of a broader effort endorsed by the UN and UNESCO’s Ocean Decade initiative, focused on dealing with what’s known as ghost gear — fishing nets and equipment left in the ocean.
The Ocean Legacy Foundation says it hopes the new program will encourage more responsible practices across the sector and help prepare companies for upcoming changes in environmental regulations.
