Campbell River’s Nunns Creek Park is one step closer to getting a major upgrade.
City Council has approved a $385,000 budget increase, from the Community Works Reserve, to help move the project along.
It’s part of a larger phased redevelopment plan to meet growing recreational demand, and to bring the park in line with the draft Parks, Recreation, and Culture Master Plan.
The vision includes creating a brand-new slo-pitch hub - a four-diamond setup designed to support league play and help attract tournaments.
The park will also get multi-use space upgrades, like soccer fields, while still keeping room for long-time events like the Salmon Festival and Logger Sports.
The plan also means that minor baseball will remain at Willow Point Park, which the City says is better suited to its needs, especially for families as the redevelopment lets both baseball and slo-pitch players have the space they need, without overlapping.
Site prep and detailed design for the new slo-pitch fields will kick off in the fall, with construction expected to start in early 2026.
Beyond the ball diamonds, the upgrades will include park beautification, infrastructure improvements, and amenities for multiple user groups.
The existing playground is also being replaced, although that portion of the work will be reviewed as part of fall financial planning.
The city says input from park users is still a big part of the process, including local slo-pitch teams, youth soccer groups, Logger Sports organizers, the dog fanciers club, and other community event leaders.
That feedback will be incorporated during the detailed design phase.
