North Island-Powell river MP Rachel Blaney is criticizing federal Liberals and Conservatives on their lack of support for affordable housing in the riding, and across Canada.
During Question Period last week, Blaney raised the drastically increased population of unhoused people in the area, asking the Liberals for more support for affordable homes.
“This is a catastrophe, yet the Liberals are leaving housing up to luxury condo developers who only care about profits. The Conservatives on council in Campbell River are taking away tax exemptions for non-profits who support those in need of a home.”, said Blaney in the House. “
“The Prime Minister says housing is not a federal responsibility as people and communities move beyond a crisis point.”
She also said ‘’the Conservatives on council in Campbell River are taking away tax exemptions for non-profits who support those in need of a home.”
Blaney noted that Comox Valley has seen a 106% increase in the unhoused population in the past year, the largest increase on record in the area. In Campbell River, the unhoused population increased by 70% during the same period. Those figures come from this year’s point-in-time count.
In the Commons, Blaney said, “People need support and affordable homes now.”
