BC RCMP have confirmed that nine people, including the shooter, died following Tuesday’s shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Police say they received a report of an active shooter at approximately 1:20 p.m. on February 10.

A Police Initiated Public Alert was issued as officers from Tumbler Ridge and nearby detachments responded, arriving within two minutes of the initial call.

Mounties say there was active gunfire when they got to the school, and shots were fired in their direction as they approached.

Officers entered the building and located the suspect within minutes. He was found deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.

The shooter has been identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar of Tumbler Ridge.

Those killed at the school include a 39-year-old female teacher, three 12-year-old girls, and two male students aged 12 and 13.

Two additional victims - a 39-year-old woman, the shooter’s mother - and an 11-year-old boy, the shooter’s step-brother - were found deceased at a local residence.

Two female victims, aged 12 and 19, were airlifted to hospital and remain in serious condition.

Police clarified that earlier information about an additional death was incorrect.

More than 100 students and staff were evacuated to the community centre once the school was secured.

About 25 people were assessed for possible injuries, but no further physical injuries were identified.

BC RCMP Major Crime took over the investigation.

Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald says investigators believe the suspect acted alone and there are no outstanding suspects, but the motive remains under investigation.

Community members needing support were being directed to the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre.

Police say families are navigating profound loss, and further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
