Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns is calling on the federal government to put an end to fur farming in Canada.
In a release, the NDP says the practice poses serious public health, environmental, and ethical concerns.
Johns says banning fur farms is a move that has the support of the public, environmentalists, infectious disease experts and First Nations, and yet the feds continue to shell out taxpayer dollars to support the industry.
The party says since 2019, Canada’s fur farming sector has received over $27 million in federal loans, despite strong opposition from Canadians, with polls showing more than 75 per cent of Canadians against the practice.
“This is an industry on the decline globally, an industry that does not have the support of Canadians, and it’s an industry that continues to get propped up by our government,” Johns added.
“That needs to change, and that’s why I’m calling on this government to take action to put an end to fur farms.”
