More Snow For Our Listening Area Today

Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 7:54 AM

By Jay Herrington

Snowfall Warnings are in place for East Vancouver Island and the Malahat Highway for Thursday, January 18, 2024.

Another round of snow is on its way today.

Snow and blowing snow will be picking back up this afternoon and running through tomorrow when it’s expected to switch to rain.
10-20 centimetres can be expected.

Areas around Nanaimo can expect a risk of freezing rain during the transition from snow to rain.

In spite of the anticipated weather, schools in SD 71 and SD 72 are open as usual today as are North Island College campuses in Campbell River, the Comox Valley and Port Alberni.

While schools are open, Comox Valley Schools says the First Student bus company cannot get out to Macauley Road for pick up of students due to icy roads.

The affected bus routes are Routes 806, 814, and 822.

As well,  there will be no bus service on Hornby or Denman Island. There is a pick-up from Buckley Bay this morning.

The City of Campbell River kept the doors to the warming centre open again last night and will make a decision today a little later on, but it’s likely to remain open, if keeping with the trend.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
