Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day has launched a campaign to encourage drivers to slow down as kids are set to return to school.
Day is reminding drivers across the province to take extra care around school buses and school zones.
His new #TimeToStop campaign encourages drivers to slow down, respect bus safety signals, and give kids the space they need to get to and from school safely.
“Arriving a little early is never worth the risk to a child’s safety,” said Day.
“When the stop arm is out and the lights are flashing, that’s the moment to stop. It’s a simple rule that saves lives.”
Day also highlighted the need for stronger province-wide standards to ensure every child in British Columbia receives the same level of protection.
Unlike other provinces, where school bus driver training and stop-arm rules are mandated and consistent, Day says B.C. still leaves many of these practices to individual bus companies and districts.
RCMP will be increasing traffic enforcement around schools and bus routes during the back-to-school season, making sure drivers slow down and pay attention.
The #TimeToStop campaign will continue throughout September with community outreach, signage, social media awareness, and advocacy for stronger safety standards across the province.
