Tuesday, September 30th, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and a time for all to reflect on the history and traumatic legacy of residential schools in Canada.

Government offices and most facilities in both the Comox Valley and Strathcona Regional Districts will be closed Tuesday in observance.

Some things will remain open, but with limited hours, such as the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex.

There’s a Public Swim, Everyone Welcome Skate & Pond Hockey: 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and the arena remains open for all pre-booked user groups.

A reminder that garbage collection will move ahead a day this week.

Residents are also encouraged to wear orange and participate in the Comox Valley Spirit Walk on September 30th at 10am.

It starts at Harmston Park and travels down Fifth Street to Lewis Park.

Also, the annual Every Child Matters Walk is taking place at 11am in Campbell River’s Spirit Square.

Watch for road closures and detours.

In Powell River, Hwy 101 between Arbutus and Alberni will be closed to vehicle traffic between 3:15 and 4:30pm for their walk.

In a release, the SRD encourages employees and the wider community to observe the day, whether through personal reflection, education, participating in awareness activities in your community, or wearing orange to raise awareness that 'Every Child Matters.'

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
