New Democrat MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard says that people in Courtenay-Comox will continue to enjoy a diverse and inclusive local arts scene as BC Arts Council grants are awarded to individual artists and organizations in the community.

Leonard says that with these awards, recipients will have more support as they continue to pursue artistic passions, community programs, and more.

She says community art and performance brings people together, fosters creativity, and makes Courtenay-Comox a more equitable and inclusive place to live.

The Comox Valley Art Gallery is receiving $25-thousand dollars while local artists Anne Cumming and Gabrielle Moore-Pratt are receiving $6000 each.

The BC Arts Council says it is working to build a more diverse and equitable funding structure to support the arts and culture community, with priority given to equity-deserving organizations and artists as well as to communities outside of the capital region and Greater Vancouver.

This funding includes scholarships, project assistance for performing artists and professional organizations, and arts-based community development.

This year, more than 250 individual artists and arts organizations throughout B.C. are benefitting from over $2.7 million in BC Arts Council grant funding.
