Local Activities And Learning Opportunities During Upcoming Fire Prevention Week

Comox Fire Rescue is urging everyone to get involved in local activities and learning opportunities during Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2023.

This year’s national campaign focuses on cooking safety and the important actions residents can take to keep everyone in the house safe.

“Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries related to fires. Unattended cooking has severe or, in some cases, fatal consequences,” said Fire Chief, Gord Schreiner.

“The good news is you can prevent most cooking fires and burns and help keep your family safe with some simple but effective tips.”

During Fire Prevention Week, the team at Comox Fire Rescue will host a series of events to increase your personal preparedness, including an open house at the fire station (1870 Noel Avenue), on Saturday, October 14, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Firefighters will be there to answer questions and provide feedback on fire escape plans. They will also be out in the community checking smoke alarms and delivering complimentary pizza on October 13.

Comox Fire Rescue has offered some cooking with caution tips:

Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, do not use the stove or stovetop.
Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.

If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains - away from your stovetop.
If you have a small (grease) cooking fire and decide to fight the fire:

•     On the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.
•     For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

If you have any doubt about fighting a small fire, you’re advised to just get out.

When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from outside the home.
