As the G7 Summit wraps up in Kananaskis, leaders have agreed to work together as the world experiences record-breaking wildfires across every forested continent over the past decade.
They’ve signed the Kananaskis Wildfire Charter, resolving to boost global cooperation to prevent, fight and recover from wildfires.
They’ve outlined a series of steps to prevent and mitigate the occurrence of wildfires, involving all different levels of government, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, international and non-governmental organizations, academia, and the private sector.
They’ll work on a sustainable forest management plan with nature-based solutions, Indigenous land management practices including cultural or controlled burning, and adopting fire risk reduction measures around communities, buildings, and infrastructure.
Alongside the G7 leaders, several other world leaders also signed off on the Charter: those of Australia, India, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, and South Africa.
They were invited to Kananaskis by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
