It is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

In Campbell River, everyone is welcome to celebrate Indigenous history and culture at Spirit Square today, with food, games and activities for the kids, music, drumming, dancing and more.

Things are happening from 11am to 5pm.

Meanwhile, the elected Chief Councillor of the K’ómoks First Nation, the Chair of the Comox Valley Regional District and the Mayors of Comox, Courtenay, and Cumberland, have invited residents to help celebrate from 3pm to 7pm across from the Puntledge RV Campground.

They issued a joint statement, saying they look forward to gathering to ‘’learn, share, and strengthen our relationship as we acknowledge and commemorate the strength, resilience, and diversity of Indigenous People.‘’

The statement went on to say that local governments in the Comox Valley have embraced the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and have formally recognized their commitment to reconciliation.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
