The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the injury of one man while in the custody of the Port Alberni RCMP.
On Saturday, April 20, 2024, police received reports that a man may be in breach of a court order and may be considering self-harm.
The man was arrested at a home and taken to the local police station.
He later complained of pain and was taken to the hospital where it was determined he had sustained a non-life-threatening injury.
How and when the man was injured are the subjects of the IIO investigation, as is whether police played any role.
