The BC Wildfire Service says wildfire activity has increased significantly in the Southeast Fire Centre following thousands of lightning strikes over the past several days.

Since Wednesday, more than 2,400 lightning strikes have been recorded across the region, sparking 38 new wildfires. With another stretch of hot, dry, and windy weather in the forecast, officials expect more fires to start.

Ground crews, heavy equipment, and aircraft are responding to the fires, with priority given to those threatening communities or critical infrastructure.

The BC Wildfire Service also says smoke has increased across much of the region, with much of it drifting north from wildfires burning in Washington and Oregon.

Two new fires were discovered over the weekend, west and north-west of Campbell River. Both are well under a hectare in size and area either being held or under control.

Anyone heading into the backcountry is encouraged to check road closures through DriveBC and review current wildfire conditions before travelling.

Boaters are also reminded to stay clear of firefighting aircraft collecting water from lakes and rivers, as interfering with wildfire operations is both dangerous and against the law.
