Two hikers have been rescued after being stuck on Mount Arrowsmith.

Two hikers have been rescued after being stuck on Mount Arrowsmith.

The Alberni Valley Rescue Squad was called out around 10pm on Sunday night to assist the two, stranded in a gully West of the Judges route hiking trail high up the mountain.

The AVRS says the pair had accessed the West Ridge from the Main Gully route and were climbing a route using ropes and anchors on wet and slick rock.

Due to the terrain and fading light, they did not have time to finish the route in daylight.

The subjects rappelled off the ridge into a gully, which led into a big snow moat that was steep, exposed, and impassable.

They were unable to descend further down the gully or climb back up to the top, so they called for help. The AVRS Rapid Response Team located the subjects in the gully using sound sweeps and finally spotted their headlamps.

By the time they were located, it was too dark, and unsafe to attempt to reach the pair themselves. North Shore Rescue was called in, using a helicopter to fly the pair to safety.
