The BC River Forecast Centre has downgraded flood concerns across much of the province, including North Vancouver Island, following several days of heavy rain and snowmelt.

A High Streamflow Advisory remains in effect for northern Vancouver Island, but the River Forecast Centre says conditions are improving as rainfall eases and rivers begin to recede.

The advisory was downgraded from a higher alert level after water levels peaked in most watersheds.

Rivers in the region saw significant rises over the past three days due to persistent rain combined with melting snow.

Flood Watches and advisories have now ended for western Vancouver Island and several outer coastal regions, but officials continue to monitor conditions on the north and east sides of the island where water levels are still running high.

Residents are being reminded to stay well back from river banks, as fast-flowing water can be dangerous even when flooding is not expected.

A High Streamflow Advisory means river levels are rising or remain high, but major flooding is not expected.
