The provincial government is providing funding to support community celebrations across B.C. during the FIFA World Cup, with events planned in the Comox Valley and Campbell River.
“We are proud to help bring the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to communities throughout B.C.,” said Premier David Eby.
“Hosting this tournament is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. It’s something that everyone will remember, especially the thousands of kids in B.C. who look up to these incredible athletes. It’s about sharing the love of sport, and the excitement, energy and pride in hosting the largest single-sport event in the world.”
A total of $1.7 million is being distributed through the Community Event Support Fund, helping 32 communities host free, soccer-themed events tied to the tournament.
In the Comox Valley, plans are already in place for a public viewing of Canada’s opening match on June 12.
The event is expected to include live local music and cultural performances alongside the game.
While specific details for Campbell River events have not yet been outlined, the funding is aimed at supporting communities across the province, including those on Vancouver Island, to host their own celebrations during the tournament.
The province says the goal is to give people the chance to experience the excitement of the World Cup closer to home, with activities ranging from live public match viewings to cultural performances, local food, and community celebrations.
Funding can be used for a range of costs, including staging live viewing screens, hiring performers, and covering event operations such as security and promotion.
