Cumberland residents tackling fall yard cleanup will once again have a free option for disposing of unwanted leaves, branches and other plant material.

The Comox Valley FireSmart Collaborative’s fall yard-debris drop-off program begins Thursday, October 1, at 1301 Knight Road in Comox.

Residential users can bring leaves, grass clippings, plants and branches measuring up to three inches in diameter. Materials may be delivered loose or in paper yard-waste bags.

The program is intended to help residents remove dry and combustible material from around their homes, reducing the amount of fuel that could contribute to the spread of a wildfire.

The site will be open daily from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. through November 15, weather permitting.

The service is limited to residential users, and commercial operators are not eligible. Food waste, plastic bags, rocks, concrete, stumps and root balls will not be accepted.

Invasive plants are also prohibited and should instead be taken to the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre for proper disposal.

Residents who have used the program in previous years should note that the drop-off site is now located across the road from its former location.
