A property that once housed the Comox fire hall could eventually become home to as many as four local families.

The Town of Comox has transferred the site at 266 Gladstone Street to Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North for an affordable homeownership project. Council unanimously supported the move.

The Town has also committed to helping with some of the costs involved in developing the property, including permit fees, development charges, servicing and infrastructure.

The fire hall opened in 1957 and operated until 1978. Its building was demolished in 2024, and the Town and Habitat have since discussed the site as a possible housing opportunity.

The project would be Habitat’s first in the Town of Comox. Habitat says its homeownership program gives working families with children an opportunity to buy a home.

Families who partner with the organization pay a mortgage geared to their income and contribute volunteer hours.

The Comox project remains in the planning stage, and no construction date has been announced.

Habitat says its immediate building work remains focused on Campbell River while planning for the Gladstone Street site continues with the Town.
