Fisheries and Oceans Canada is warning that salmon sold from the back of a truck, or online, at prices too good to be true, are probably too good to be true.
The agency says conserving salmon and allowing them to reach spawning grounds is a key priority as it points to continued illegal fishing on the Fraser River.
The department says there are health and safety concerns surrounding the proper handling and storage of fish, which needs to be inspected before being sold by those who are authorized to do so.
It says you should ask to see a license from anyone selling seafood from a non-commercial source.
The license should say the fish was harvested for sale.
Those who are involved in the illegal selling or buying of fish could face fines up to $100-thousand, or prison time.
