The BC Wildfire Service reminds community members that as of 12 p.m. Thursday, campfires, backyard fires and beach fires will not be permitted on Vancouver Island.

The service announced the ban earlier this week for the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes all of Vancouver Island and the south coast of BC.

The ban applies to all recreational fires, including campfires, backyard fires and beach fires.

All open burning and using items such as fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels, and torches (including propane torches for the purpose of burning weeds) are prohibited.

Certain cooking stoves and campfires that run on gas or other liquids are still permitted, but in extreme fire conditions, they may also be prohibited.

People found in contravention of the fire ban may be subject to fines and legal action in accordance with bylaws and provincial regulations.

To learn about prohibitions and restrictions in your area, visit Coastal Fire Centre.
