Campfires, backyard fires and beach fires will not be permitted as of noon Thursday on Vancouver Island.
The ban applies to all recreational fires, including campfires, backyard fires and beach fires.
All open burning and using items such as fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels, and torches (including propane torches for the purpose of burning weeds) are prohibited.
Campbell River Fire Chief Kelly Bellefleur says they’re taking proactive steps to reduce the chance of human-caused fires.
The ban follows the BC Wildfire Service’s announcement to prohibit campfires for the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes all of Vancouver Island and the south coast of BC.
The use of CSA-rated or ULC-rated campfire apparatus and cooking stoves that use liquid or gaseous fuel is allowed at this time, however, in extreme fire conditions, these may also be prohibited.
People found in contravention of the fire ban may be subject to fines and legal action in accordance with bylaws and provincial regulations.
