With autumn approaching and leaves beginning to accumulate, the Comox Valley Regional District is reminding residents that fall yard cleanup can also be an opportunity to reduce wildfire risk around their homes.

FireSmart recommends removing fallen leaves, plant debris and other combustible materials from around properties, particularly near homes, roofs and gutters.

Residents are encouraged to maintain a non-flammable zone of at least 1.5 metres around their home and keep grass and weeds cut below 10 centimetres.

Trees can also play a role in wildfire risk.

Homeowners are encouraged to prune trees so the lowest branches are at least two metres above the ground, helping reduce the chance of a ground fire spreading into the tree canopy.

Firewood and fuel tanks should be stored at least 10 metres away from buildings and surrounding vegetation whenever possible.

Landscaping choices can make a difference as well, with residents encouraged to consider fire-resistant plants when planning or maintaining gardens around their homes.

The Regional District says taking some of these relatively simple steps during regular fall cleanup can help reduce the amount of combustible material around a property and make homes better prepared in the event of a wildfire.
