A Vancouver Island emergency communications trainer is being recognized on the national stage for her exceptional mentorship and dedication to public safety.

Tanya Silletta has been named APCO Canada’s Trainer of the Year, one of the highest honours awarded by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials.

Silletta has worked at E-Comm’s Vancouver Island emergency communications centre for six years, spending five of those as part of the training team.

In that time, she played a direct role in developing the next generation of emergency call takers and dispatchers - training more than 100 police call takers and 50 dispatchers.

Today, more than 70 percent of staff at the Vancouver Island centre have been taught or mentored by her.

Alongside the individual recognition, APCO Canada has also presented E-Comm’s Fire Dispatch team with its national Team Award for their response to a series of major structure fires in Vancouver last year.

APCO says both awards highlight excellence in emergency communications and the essential work performed behind the scenes when public safety is on the line.
