The Village of Cumberland is reminding residents to take extra care with animal attractants around their homes as we head into this time of year.

The village says bears that become accustomed to human food and garbage can become a danger to the community and are at risk of being destroyed.

Residents are being asked to do their part to keep wildlife wild and reduce the chances of conflicts.

The advice from WildSafeBC is to keep garbage stored securely indoors or in a bear-resistant enclosure, and only put garbage, compost, and recycling out on collection day.

Residents should never put those items out the night before collection.

Fruit trees can also become an attractant, so people are being asked to pick fruit as it ripens and make sure they don’t build up on the ground.

Bird feeders should be brought in from April through November.

If feeders are being used, residents should make sure seeds don't accumulate underneath them.

The village is also reminding residents not to feed wild animals.

Wildlife that becomes food-conditioned is more likely to approach people and homes, increasing the potential for conflict.

Barbecues should also be kept clean and free of food odours.

If you encounter wildlife that's already in conflict, residents are asked to report it immediately to the Conservation Officer Service, at 1-877-952-7277.
