A neighbourhood in Cumberland is being recognized for taking action to reduce wildfire risk.

Residents along Camp Road are working together through the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program, applying FireSmart principles around their homes with support from the Cumberland Fire Department and the Comox Valley FireSmart Collaborative.

For the second straight year, neighbours organized a spring cleanup, trimming tree branches, removing woody debris, and using a wood chipper to dispose of vegetation.

A second collection day also helped residents get rid of other flammable materials.

Camp Road FireSmart Collective neighbourhood champion Brad Fraser says the program has helped bring neighbours together while making the community more resilient to wildfire.

Cumberland Deputy Fire Chief Stéphane Dionne says FireSmart measures don't just protect individual homes, they also help protect neighbours and the wider community.

The FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program supports communities that take steps to reduce their vulnerability to wildfires.

Local FireSmart representatives provide home assessments, chipping programs, and other wildfire mitigation support.
