The Village of Cumberland is speeding up its timeline for new zero carbon building requirements.

Council has approved changes to its Building Bylaw that will require new construction to meet stronger emissions standards as part of the Village's Climate Action Plan.

Mayor Vickey Brown says the changes will help create homes and buildings that produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, cost less to operate, and provide clearer expectations for builders, developers and homeowners.

She says the new rules will also improve consistency across the Comox Valley.

Under the updated by law, new buildings will be required to meet Strong Carbon Performance standards starting January 1st, 2027.

One year later, on January 1st, 2028, all new construction will be required to meet the Zero Carbon Performance standard.

Village officials say the changes are also expected to streamline the permitting process through a number of administrative updates.
