A Cumberland man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2024 hit-and-run death of Comox Valley cyclist Rod Kelly.
Kelly, 54, was riding his bicycle along the shoulder of the Comox Valley Parkway on February 8, 2024, when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene.
Police later located a vehicle of interest near Comox Lake. Two days after Kelly’s death, officers arrested Steven Squires of Cumberland in the area.
Squires, who is now 45, was initially charged with first-degree murder and failing to stop after an accident causing death.
RCMP says Squires pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on September 8. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled for a later date.
