Cumberland Village Council has agreed to join a class action lawsuit to recover climate costs.
West Coast Environmental Law has been asking municipalities to sign on - a handful have, including View Royal and Qualicum Beach, and now Cumberland.
The group is proposing an initial lawsuit against several of the world’s largest fossil fuel polluters for the role they play.
Council was asked to allocate at least $1 per resident towards a fund for the lawsuit.
It considered the request at its meeting last week and committed to joining in the lawsuit.
Council referred the financial commitment to its 2025 budget meetings which will take place in October.
