The City of Courtenay is reminding residents tackling fall cleanup projects to consider where their dirty water and runoff may end up.

Unlike household wastewater, stormwater is not treated before it is released.

Water entering storm drains can flow directly into local creeks, rivers and the ocean, meaning soaps, bleach and other cleaning products may eventually reach fish habitat and surrounding waterways.

Residents cleaning moss from their roofs or washing outdoor surfaces are encouraged to avoid using bleach, soaps and detergents.

The City recommends removing roof moss by scraping it away or using a moss-control product approved for roof use in Canada.

Before applying any product, residents should disconnect their downspouts and ensure wastewater remains on their property rather than flowing onto the street or into the storm-drain system.

The City says a few small changes to how residents approach outdoor cleaning can help protect waterways throughout the Comox Valley.
