The City of Parksville is warning residents about recent cougar activity in an area southeast of Shelly Road and Stanford Avenue.

The warning comes after two livestock animals were killed near Martindale Road, with activity reported both east and west of the road.

The Conservation Officer Service is aware of the situation and is working on a response. Nearby camp grounds and golf courses have also been notified.

Residents are being reminded to use caution if they encounter a cougar.

Officials say people should stay calm, never run, make themselves appear as large as possible, and slowly back away while keeping eye contact.

People are also encouraged to make noise while walking in wooded areas, travel in groups when possible, and carry bear spray.

The City says children should be supervised outdoors, pets should be kept leashed or behind a fence, and residents should be especially cautious around dusk and dawn, when cougars are most active.

Anyone who has livestock killed or injured is asked to contact the Conservation Officer Service.
