Comox Valley Search and Rescue were busy this past weekend supporting BCEHS (BC Ambulance) with rescues on Saturday afternoon and again late Sunday, carrying into the early hours of Monday.

On Saturday, CVSAR was requested to locate, assess, stabilize, and transport a female mountain biker who had crashed while riding with her family and was unable to walk.

Staff treated her for a suspected pelvic fracture before moving her by stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

On Sunday, just before 5:00 pm, the team was called to assist a male hiker visiting from Vancouver who had fallen while exploring Rosewall Creek Trail.

He was located at the falls, unable to walk. CVSAR, supported by Campbell River SAR and 49 North Helicopters, attempted a long-line helicopter rescue.

However, due to difficult terrain and approaching darkness, the helicopter was forced to return to base.

Additional crews from Arrowsmith SAR (Parksville/Qualicum) were requested, along with a night-hoist operation supported by North Shore Rescue through the Emergency Coordination Centre.

Teams eventually reached the man in darkness and he was moved downstream where he was hoisted out and flown to Qualicum Airport. In a post on Facebook, CVSAR said team members were finally home and “back in their pajamas” just before 2:00 am Monday morning.
