Comox Valley RCMP are looking for help in identifying the riders of a dirt bike and an e-bike driving dangerously on Cliffe Ave in Courtenay.

Police have some pictures up on their social media channels.

The incident happened on Thursday, July 16, at around 9:50 p.m.

Police are asking anyone who recognizes the bikes or knows the identities of the riders to contact investigators.

One of the bikes appears to be a blue and white Husqvarna Motocross dirt bike; possibly the same bike that was reported in another dangerous driving complaint received on July 10 in Courtenay.

Constable Monika Terragni says police continue to receive reports of unsafe riding involving unlicensed dirt bikes, e-bikes, and electric scooters throughout the Comox Valley.

Terragni says they are not typically harmless incidents, adding that the risk of a serious injury or fatal collision increases every time someone chooses to ride recklessly, at high speeds, without proper safety equipment, or on roads and trails where they shouldn't be.

“We need this behaviour to stop before someone is seriously hurt or killed.”, says Terragni.

Since July 1, Comox Valley RCMP has received more than 20 reports involving dangerous or unlawful operation of e-bikes, electric scooters, and unlicensed dirt bikes, averaging more than one complaint every day.

Incidents have included excessive speed, dangerous driving, riders travelling without helmets, unauthorized riding in parks and public spaces, collisions causing injury, multiple occurrences of riders failing to stop for police, an e-bike collision, and a recent crash on Lake Trail Road involving an unlicensed dirt bike rider who suffered a fractured leg.

Police say they have identified and taken action against a number of riders through patrols, public reporting, and investigative follow-up.

In several cases, riders have been stopped, identified, and appropriate enforcement and educational measures have been taken, including follow-up with parents when youth were involved.

However, many riders flee before officers can safely stop them, making information from the public critical to ongoing investigations.
