The City of Courtenay is hoping to clear up a common misconception surrounding property assessments.
2025 property assessments have been mailed to all property owners in the province and the average Courtenay single residential home increased in value by 1%.
The misconception, the City says, is that property assessments will result in a proportional change in your property taxes.
This is not the case. In a post on X, the City noted that the most important factor is how your assessed value changed in relation to the average in the municipality.
The post says the City of Courtenay does not determine property assessment values and cannot alter them. Any property owner wishing to appeal their assessment would need to apply directly to the BC Assessment Authority by January 31st.
