Tuesday is Canada Day, and there is plenty to do to celebrate locally.

The City of Courtenay kicks things off tonight with the Night Before concert at Lewis Park, from 415pm to 10pm.

The evening begins with Indigenous and multicultural performances.

Tuesday for Canada Day, in Downtown Courtenay, the 5th Street Mile begins at 9:30 a.m. and the Canada Day parade starts at 10am down 5th Street, featuring floats, music and community groups.

Celebrations will continue at Lewis Park from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with activities for all ages, including a kids’ zone, food trucks, vendors, activity booths, welcoming ceremonies and cake.

The popular children’s bike draw for ages 5 to 12 also returns, with tickets available at the special events tent beside the Lewis Park stage.

Also in Courtenay on Canada Day, a free swim at the Courtenay Outdoor Pool, an open house at the Courtenay and District Museum, and the Evergreen Club Tea Dance at the Native Sons Hall.

Visit City of Courtenay for the full schedule.

The City of Campbell River is bringing back a temporary bike lane on Pier Street (Highway 19A), between the Maritime Heritage Centre and the crosswalk at Robert V. Ostler Park, for Canada Day.

Temporary markers will turn the parking lane on the water side of Pier Street into a two-way bike lane from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The temporary bike lane will connect the existing bike lane on Highway 19A to the south and help cyclists travel downtown more safely.

BC Transit is reminding community members that its offering free rides on Canada Day.

In Campbell River, a special Canada Day schedule will be in effect tomorrow with free transit being offered on all regular routes and handyDART.

In Comox Valley, Saturday service will be in effect with free transit service on all routes and handyDART.

A reminder though to expect delays due to detours near downtown Courtenay during the Canada Day parade and celebrations.
