The Strathcona Housing Alliance is out in the community today as Campbell River takes part in its fourth Point in Time Count, or PiT.
Previous counts were held in 2018, 2021, and 2023.
Sometimes called “homeless counts,” PiT Counts offer a 24-hour snapshot of demographics, service use, and housing challenges.
But Stefanie Hendrickson, Executive Consultant with the Alliance, says that label doesn’t tell the full story.
She explains the PiT Count looks at people living in places where rent or equivalent isn’t paid - whether they’re couch-surfing, living in a vehicle or tent, or staying in transitional housing or a shelter.
The survey takes less than five minutes, is completely anonymous, and can be done either in person or over the phone.
Survey teams will be moving throughout the community all day, with several designated spots available.
If you’d like to take part, you can visit the Campbell River Library from 9 to 3, or the Women’s Centre between 10 and 2.
Food and refreshments are being offered at both locations, along with laundry and shower coupons and some hygiene kits, while supplies last.
If you can’t make it in person, volunteers will be taking survey calls today only at 778-348-0762 or 250-830-4092.
The information collected helps governments and community organizations better understand housing insecurity and guide decisions on services, housing, and support programs.
