School District 72 trustees have received a pair of provincial updates that align with the district’s focus on student success and wellbeing.
At a recent meeting, highlights were shared from the BC School Trustees Association’s Indigenous Education Advisory Council, where members discussed reconciliation efforts and how local school districts can align with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The council also explored land-based learning and accessibility in education and reviewed a new First Nations Education Steering Committee toolkit aimed at improving student attendance and engagement - recognizing how closely regular attendance is tied to academic success.
As well, figures were shared on provincial early learning data presented by the University of British Columbia’s Human Early Learning Partnership.
That research tracks child development and wellbeing through teacher and family surveys conducted across the province.
Findings show that early childhood vulnerability has increased over time, highlighting the importance of collaboration among schools, families, and communities to support children even before they enter the classroom.
SD72 says it will review its own local results once that data becomes available.
