A Campbell River man has been sentenced to four years in prison for causing a crash that killed two American tourists.

According to the Times Colonist, Kyle Rodney O’Callaghan, 33, pleaded guilty Tuesday to dangerous driving causing the deaths of Charlotte Van Valkenburg, 51, of Bend and her cousin, Curtis Bartley.

O’Callaghan also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing bodily harm to Van Valkenburg’s father, Ivan Smith, and to his own two sisters.

The accident occurred on the Island Highway in September 2019.

The crash happened on wet roads with O’Callaghan travelling at dangerous speeds.
