The City of Campbell River is moving ahead with major infrastructure upgrades, supported by $1.68 million in federal funding through the Canada Community-Building Fund.

The funding is helping pay for improvements to roads, bridges, parks, pedestrian safety, and long-term planning across the city.

More than $650 thousand has gone toward road repaving and rehabilitation, including work at the Dogwood Street and 9th Avenue intersection, and sections of Willis Road, Dogwood Street, Garfield Road, and 16th Avenue. In total, just over 1-point-2-kilometres of roadway were repaved, with more than 9-thousand square metres of new asphalt laid.

Another $519 thousand is being used for bridge rehabilitation. Upgrades are underway at both the Baikie Island Bridge and the Argonaut Bridge.

A new foundation at Baikie Island Bridge will allow fire pumper trucks to access the island, improving emergency response, while structural upgrades at Argonaut Bridge are aimed at improving safety and extending the bridge’s lifespan.

The city is also investing $380 thousand into upgrades at Nunns Creek Park.

Plans include four slo-pitch fields, a multi-use field, a festival area, new concession and washroom facilities, and a walking path.

The improvements are designed to expand field availability for tournaments and community events.

Pedestrian safety improvements are also included, with $120 thousand used to install overhead pedestrian crossing lights and traffic control upgrades at four locations around Campbell River.

Funding is also supporting ongoing work on the city’s Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw updates, a multi-year project intended to guide growth and development well into the future.

Mayor Kermit Dahl says the funding is helping the city make strategic investments that improve daily life for residents, businesses, and visitors, calling the federal support vital to meeting local infrastructure needs.
