A broken watermain has been identified as a contributing factor in Friday morning’s landslide near a condominium building on South Island Highway in Campbell River.
The Campbell River Fire Department was called to the property at 350 South Island Highway at approximately 6:06 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible landslide.
Firefighters attended the site and assessed the situation.
Residents did not need to evacuate the building, and no injuries were reported.
The slide primarily affected the property’s parking area beside the slope, where cleanup work has been underway.
As part of its preliminary investigation, the City confirmed that a watermain broke in the area during the early morning hours and contributed to the slope failure.
Municipal crews have been working to repair the damaged watermain and clean up the affected portions of the property.
The City says it will continue monitoring the location as required.
A further assessment is also planned to examine the stability of the slope and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Any additional updates will be posted at City of Campbell River.
