The Campbell River School District is reviewing its diversity, equality and equity policy, with proposed updates aimed at strengthening protections for students and reinforcing a commitment to inclusive schools.

The discussion took place during a recent public board meeting as part of an ongoing policy review process.

Trustees say the changes are being considered in response to current events at the provincial level, and to ensure the district’s policy clearly reflects existing human rights legislation and its role as a public education body.

Trustee Kat Eddy told the board the review is an early step, giving trustees a chance to share proposed revisions and gather feedback before the policy comes forward for formal consideration later this spring.

The draft update would expand the existing policy and revise its language based on input from the district’s Equity in Action Committee and school administrators.

It also includes more direct references to legislation, helping ensure alignment with provincial human rights requirements.

Eddy says the goal is to make expectations clearer and more explicit, particularly around the district’s responsibility to ensure all students feel safe, valued and respected in schools.

Board members voiced strong support for the proposed wording during the discussion, describing it as clear and firm in protecting the rights of all members of the school community.

One revision suggests adjusting the definition of equality to focus on equal access to opportunities, rather than identical opportunities, to better reflect that students may require different supports to achieve similar outcomes.

Feedback will be reviewed before the policy is brought forward as a formal motion at a future meeting, with final approval expected before the end of the school year.
