The BC Wildfire Service has given an update on the wildfire situation in the province.

The BC Wildfire Service has given an update on the wildfire situation in the province.

Since thunderstorms began passing through the Southeast Fire Centre last Thursday, over 2,000 lightning strikes have been recorded in the region.

Ground crews and aviation resources have since responded to 76 new fires - 59 of which remain active.

In total, there are 126 active fires in British Columbia - up a couple dozen in the past two days.

The service says with hot and dry conditions forecast to continue, holdover fires from the lightning are expected to be discovered over the next week.

Holdover fires are often lightning-caused fires that lie dormant and undetected for a time after they start.
