An update from BC Hydro as testing is underway this week on the equipment at the Puntledge Hydroelectric System.

In preparation for summer low flows, the Comox Lake Reservoir is being maintained at a near full level.

Operations are generally between 131 to 135.3 metres above sea level, which as of Wednesday, was within that range, and BC Hydro spokesperson Karla Louwers says inflows are near normal for this time of year.

Following the fish migration flow yesterday, the total spill from Comox Dam was to increase from 25m3/s to 37 m3/s.

The powerhouse will be operating at full capacity until the unit goes out of service on Tuesday (June 17).

Flows down the Barber’s Hole, Nymph Falls and Stotan Falls stretch of the river will continue to see higher flows and the public is advised to use caution in that stretch, with safety signage in place.

Starting Friday night, crews will further increase spill from the dam to about 48 m3/s.

The increased spill is required to manage reservoir levels until the Powerhouse goes out of service next week.

BC Hydro provides a series of higher flow releases below the diversion dam to aid in the migration of Chinook salmon.
