BC Hydro has passed a major milestone in the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure across British Columbia, now operating more than 800 public EV charging ports provincewide.

The milestone was marked with the launch of BC Hydro’s highest-powered fast chargers to date, introduced at a new charging hub at the BCIT campus in Burnaby.

While the site showcases the latest technology, BC Hydro says the focus remains on building a faster, more reliable charging network for drivers across the province.

The new chargers include 400 kilowatt units capable of adding roughly 100 kilometres of driving range in about three minutes, making them the fastest on BC Hydro’s network.

The chargers also support power sharing, allowing multiple vehicles to charge at the same time without significantly increasing wait times.

BC Hydro says the Burnaby installation reflects a broader shift toward hub-style charging sites, with multiple high-capacity chargers located along highway corridors and in densely populated areas.

The hubs are designed to support growing demand as electric vehicle adoption continues to rise across B.C., with more than 220 thousand EVs now on the road.

Over the past year, BC Hydro has tripled the size of its public charging network, adding more than 400 new charging ports. About two dozen new charging hubs have opened in communities throughout the province, each offering between eight and 22 ports to improve availability and reduce congestion.

The utility is also tailoring charger speeds to location and driver needs, with 180-kilowatt chargers installed at places where drivers typically stop for longer periods, such as grocery stores, and ultra-fast chargers deployed at high-turnover locations.

BC Hydro says further expansion is planned, including additional 400-kilowatt chargers beginning this year.

The province’s Electric Highway was completed in September of last year, with fast chargers placed roughly every 150 kilometres along major routes.

BC Hydro operates more than 70 percent of those charging locations.

The provincewide fast-charging network now includes 811 charging ports at 178 sites, funded through a partnership with the Province of British Columbia and Natural Resources Canada.
