New figures from Statistics Canada show B.C.'s Crime Severity Index dropped for the second straight year in 2025.

The province says the index is now nearly 12-percent lower than it was in 2023 and has reached its lowest level in several years.

“New Statistics Canada data shows B.C.’s Crime Severity Index is down for the second year in a row, nearly 12% lower than in 2023 and at its lowest level in years.”, said Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General,

“This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of sustained partnerships and investments in enforcement and intervention by our government, First Nations and local governments, police services, community organizations and businesses that are working together to build a safer province.”

The province says several communities saw improvements, while there were decreases in several types of crime last year, including extortion, shoplifting, child sexual abuse, and mischief.

Krieger says the province is continuing to expand programs aimed at repeat violent offenders and chronic property crime while working with the federal government on Criminal Code reforms.
